KenGen Appoints Ronoh Kibet Charles as New CEO, to Succeed Peter Njenga in 2027

The Kenya Electricity Generating Company PLC (KenGen) has appointed Ronoh Kibet Charles as its Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer designate, paving the way for a leadership transition at the country’s largest electricity generator.

Kibet, who currently serves as KenGen’s General Manager for Commercial Services, will officially assume office on February 1, 2027, succeeding Eng. Peter Waweru Njenga, who is set to retire.

The appointment, announced on Saturday, October 24, 2026, follows a competitive recruitment process conducted by the company’s board. A transition period has been established to facilitate a smooth handover and ensure continuity in KenGen’s strategic priorities.

Kibet brings more than 17 years of experience in geothermal development, project delivery and commercial strategy, having held key positions that combine engineering expertise with business leadership.

In his current role, he oversees energy markets, investments, new business development and partnerships, marketing, corporate communication and sustainability.

He has contributed to the growth of renewable energy projects, the expansion of KenGen’s international consultancy services and the advancement of the Olkaria Green Energy Park, which is part of the company’s broader diversification strategy.

His appointment comes as KenGen seeks to strengthen its position in the energy sector while expanding its business beyond electricity generation through investments, consultancy services and other commercial opportunities.

During Njenga’s tenure, the company recorded significant financial performance, reporting a profit after tax of KSh10.48 billion for the 2025 financial year. KenGen also expanded its geothermal consultancy portfolio, including assignments in Eswatini.

The board, management and staff expressed appreciation to Njenga for his leadership and contribution to the company’s growth, wishing him well as he prepares for retirement.

Kibet holds a bachelor’s degree in Telecommunication and Information Engineering and a master’s degree in Project Management, both from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT).

He is also a certified Project Management Professional and SAP Project System Consultant.

His professional development includes an Organisational Leadership programme at Harvard Business School, alongside executive education at IESE Business School in Spain, the University of Cape Town and Strathmore Business School.

Kibet is affiliated with the Engineers Board of Kenya, the Institution of Engineers of Kenya and the Geothermal Association of Kenya. He is also a recipient of Kenya’s Order of the Grand Warrior (OGW).

In congratulating him on his appointment, the KenGen board expressed confidence in his ability to strengthen the company’s performance, develop its workforce and advance its growth ambitions.

His incoming leadership is expected to play a key role in steering KenGen’s next phase of development, with a focus on renewable energy, commercial expansion and sustainable business growth.
