KEBS DG Esther Ngari Advances Standards Education and Kenya-DRC Trade Cooperation

Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) Director-General Esther Ngari, EBS, is strengthening efforts to position standards and quality assurance at the centre of Kenya’s education, business growth and international trade through strategic engagements with academic and business leaders.

In separate meetings, Ngari hosted the leadership of International Leadership University (ILU) and representatives of the Congolese Chamber of Commerce International and Industry (CCCCII.DRC), with discussions focusing on standards education, professional development and opportunities to enhance trade cooperation between Kenya and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The engagements underscored the importance of integrating standards awareness into professional training while strengthening partnerships that enable businesses to access wider markets.

During her meeting with ILU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Tim M. Kiruhi and Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Finance, Administration and Strategic Advancement Dr. Edward N. Kobuthi, Ngari explored opportunities for collaboration between the university and KEBS to prepare the next generation of Kenyan leaders and professionals.

The proposed cooperation seeks to deepen understanding of standards, product quality and the role of standardisation in building a competitive, productive and responsible workforce.

As Kenya continues to develop its human capital, equipping students and professionals with knowledge of quality standards can help bridge the gap between academic training and industry expectations. It can also promote a culture in which quality, safety and compliance are considered essential elements of professional practice and enterprise development.

Under Ngari’s leadership, such engagements provide an opportunity to strengthen the connection between standards institutions and learning establishments, ensuring that quality consciousness extends beyond manufacturing facilities into classrooms, workplaces and business operations.

The KEBS Director-General later hosted a delegation from CCCCII.DRC led by Chief Executive Officer Dr. Kassim Were, accompanied by Penah Mutinda, Head of Business Development, Marketing and Partnerships.

Their discussions explored opportunities for trade collaboration between Kenya and the DRC, highlighting the importance of product standards in facilitating cross-border commerce and opening up new markets for businesses.

Standards play a critical role in ensuring that products meet established requirements for safety, quality and reliability. For businesses seeking to expand beyond domestic markets, compliance can strengthen consumer confidence and help them meet the requirements of prospective trading partners.

For Kenya, deeper engagement with business organisations across the region presents an opportunity to promote quality-assured products, strengthen commercial relationships and support enterprises seeking to expand their regional footprint.

Ngari’s engagements reflect the complementary role of KEBS in supporting both human capital development and market access. While collaboration with universities can strengthen knowledge of standardisation among future professionals, partnerships with business organisations can help advance awareness of the quality requirements that underpin successful trade.

The broader message is that standards are not merely technical requirements but important instruments for protecting consumers, supporting responsible businesses and facilitating economic growth.

Every product that meets the required standards contributes to greater confidence in the marketplace. For Kenyan enterprises, maintaining consistent quality can improve competitiveness, create opportunities for regional expansion and support job creation.

As Kenya deepens its economic relationships with neighbouring countries, Ngari’s engagements highlight the importance of making standards and quality assurance integral to the country’s ambition to build competitive businesses, develop skilled professionals and expand trade opportunities across Africa.
