KARAKACHA GIVES GOVERNMENT ULTIMATUM TO FIX MTITO ANDEI ACCIDENT BLACKSPOT AFTER KANGA CRASH CLAIMS 22 LIVES

Matatu Owners Association President Albert Karakacha has issued a stern ultimatum to the government to urgently fix the deadly Mtito Andei accident hotspot along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway, warning that matatu operators may be forced to close the road if action is not taken.
Karakacha is urging President William Ruto to order the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) to act swiftly to fix that road and address the dangerous conditions that have turned the stretch into a death trap.
His demand comes after a horrific Sunday morning accident on October 25, 2026, at Kanga, near Mtito Andei, that claimed 22 lives and left several others seriously injured.
According to Makueni County Commissioner Abdullahi Khalif, the crash involved a passenger bus that rammed into a truck at Kanga on the Mombasa-Nairobi highway. Initial reports indicate the bus was ferrying passengers returning from a burial ceremony when it collided head-on with a lorry at around 7am.
"The government must treat this with the urgency it deserves. President Ruto must direct KeNHA to move with speed. We have lost too many lives on this stretch," Karakacha said.
He noted that the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway is a vital economic corridor serving PSVs, private motorists and heavy commercial trucks, but recurring fatal accidents have raised serious questions about road safety infrastructure.
Karakacha said the continued loss of lives was unacceptable and called for immediate intervention, including improving signage, expanding the road and addressing the blackspot once and for all.
He sent his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and wished the injured a quick recovery. The injured were rushed to Mtito Andei Sub-County Hospital and Makindu Hospital for emergency treatment.
May the souls of the departed rest in eternal peace, and may their families find strength during this difficult time.
