Hinga Hailed as Affordable Housing Programme Expands in Lamu

President William Ruto has announced an additional KSh7.5 billion investment to construct 3,000 housing units under the Affordable Housing Programme in Lamu County, as the Government prepares for the development of the Dangote East Africa Refinery.

The investment is expected to complement other ongoing housing-related projects in the county, including modern markets and student hostels, which have a combined investment of  KSh6 billion.

The latest commitment highlights the growing role of affordable and decent housing in supporting major investments and preparing communities for increased economic activity and population growth.

The progress also reflects the work being undertaken by PS Charles Hinga CBS, CA, in the State Department for Housing, where the Affordable Housing Programme has continued to expand across the country.

Under Hinga’s leadership, the State Department has remained focused on translating the Government’s housing agenda into tangible projects while linking housing development with broader urban infrastructure, employment and economic opportunities.

In Lamu, the planned housing units are expected to provide accommodation for workers and residents as the county prepares for increased activity associated with the refinery project and other investments.

President Ruto has also urged the private sector to invest in complementary facilities and services, including hotels and other accommodation facilities, to meet anticipated demand as workers and visitors arrive in the county.

The Government will further establish a standing committee comprising officials from the National Government and Lamu County to address concerns raised by residents regarding the project.

The developments underline the importance of coordinated planning as Lamu positions itself for a new phase of industrial and economic growth.

With the State Department for Housing driving the Affordable Housing Programme, PS Charles Hinga continues to play a central role in turning the Government’s housing agenda into practical projects that respond to emerging economic opportunities and the needs of communities.
