Uhuru Claims Raila Won 2022 Election as He Takes Fresh Swipe at Ruto

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has reignited debate over the 2022 presidential election, claiming that Azimio la Umoja candidate Raila Odinga won the election despite official results declaring William Ruto the winner.

Speaking during the Jubilee Party National Delegates Conference on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, Uhuru revisited the disputed election and criticised the current administration of President William Ruto.

Uhuru’s remarks come as he prepares to hand over the leadership of Jubilee Party to former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, who has been endorsed by the party as its presidential candidate for the 2027 General Election.

The former President’s claim about the 2022 election challenges the officially recorded outcome. Ruto was declared the winner of the August 9, 2022 presidential election with 7,176,141 votes against Raila’s 6,942,930 votes. Raila challenged the outcome at the Supreme Court, but the court upheld Ruto’s victory. (

Uhuru had supported Raila’s presidential bid in 2022 after Jubilee joined the Azimio coalition. At the time, he publicly backed Raila as his preferred successor.

His latest remarks are expected to revive political debate over the 2022 election and further sharpen the emerging political realignments ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The Jubilee NDC also marked a significant moment in the party’s leadership transition, with Uhuru announcing that he would step aside and allow Matiang’i to take charge as the party prepares for the next phase of its political activities.
