Parliamentary aspirant Kassim Swaleh has called for a political culture where voters assess leaders by their character, ability and commitment to serving the community rather than their family background or social standing.

Swaleh, who is seeking to represent Soy Constituency in Parliament, made the remarks while reflecting on the challenges facing people from humble backgrounds who aspire to leadership.

He drew inspiration from the famous words of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., who spoke of a society where people would be judged by the content of their character rather than the colour of their skin.

Swaleh said the same principle should guide political choices in Kenya, particularly as the country moves closer to the 2027 General Election.

“I have a dream that one day too soon, sons and daughters of peasants and from humble beginnings will be voted without being judged from their family backgrounds, but by their ability to help humanity,” he said.

His message comes as political competition begins to take shape across constituencies ahead of the next General Election.

Swaleh's public profile identifies him with Eldoret and Uasin Gishu County, while his social media platforms have increasingly carried messages touching on community engagement and his political ambitions. 

The Soy parliamentary hopeful said a person's background should not determine whether they deserve an opportunity to serve in public office.

He argued that leadership should be based on the values a candidate holds, their understanding of community challenges and their ability to turn promises into meaningful action.
