Dagoretti North legislator Robert Alai has called on the University of Eldoret to ensure due process in its disciplinary proceedings against a part-time lecturer accused of making controversial political remarks during a classroom session.

In a media statement dated September 28, Alai urged the university to clarify what it means by “immediate and appropriate disciplinary action” and disclose whether the process currently underway is an investigation, an interim measure or a sanction.

The controversy stems from remarks reportedly made on September 24 during a SHUM 211: State and Society Development class at the University of Eldoret. The university subsequently condemned the remarks and said they did not represent its official position, policy or views. Reports about the incident say the lecturer’s comments concerned President William Ruto and the 2027 presidential election, with some reports alleging that students from particular regions were told not to return to the university if Ruto lost the election. Alai's statement does not dispute the need to investigate the allegations. Instead, he argues that the evidence should be independently verified before a final disciplinary decision is reached.

“The allegations must be taken seriously. Students and staff deserve safety and dignity. The lecturer also deserves a fair, impartial process before any finding of misconduct or punishment,” Alai said in the statement.

He specifically asked the university to preserve and verify the evidence, including original digital material, context and potentially exculpatory information, while giving the lecturer an opportunity to respond.

Alai also cited constitutional protections concerning fair labour practices, fair administrative action and freedom of expression, while noting that such protections do not shield proven misconduct.

The legislator further called for a fair hearing before any final decision, an impartial decision-maker, applicable review rights and protection of students, complainants, witnesses and the lecturer from retaliation or unnecessary public exposure.

The University of Eldoret has said it expects all staff, including part-time lecturers, to observe standards of professionalism, academic integrity, respect, inclusivity and responsible conduct. Alai has requested a written explanation of the university's disciplinary process and safeguards within seven days of receiving his letter, while stressing that the investigation itself need not be completed within that period.

The university has yet to announce a final outcome in the disciplinary matter.
