‘Nurses Deserve Respect, Not Attacks’: KNUN Condemns Violence Against Members During Kisii Demonstrations

Kenya National Union of Nurses (KNUN) Secretary-General Seth Panyako has condemned the alleged attack on nurses and midwives who took part in demonstrations in Kisii, saying healthcare workers should never be punished for peacefully demanding better working conditions.

Panyako said KNUN members were attacked while exercising what he described as their legitimate right to demonstrate and push for justice, improved working conditions and the welfare of nurses and midwives.

The union leader expressed concern over what he termed violence and intimidation against healthcare workers, stressing that nurses and midwives deserve to carry out their duties and advocate for their rights in an environment of safety and dignity.

“Nurses and midwives deserve respect, dignity and protection—not attacks for standing up for their rights,” Panyako said.

His remarks come amid growing concerns among healthcare workers over working conditions, welfare and the need for authorities to address grievances raised by medical professionals.

Panyako called on relevant authorities to urgently investigate the Kisii incident and ensure that anyone found responsible for attacking or intimidating the demonstrators is held accountable.

He also urged authorities to guarantee the safety of healthcare workers who participate in lawful demonstrations and other activities aimed at advancing their professional and workplace rights.

Despite the incident, Panyako maintained that the union would not be cowed by intimidation.

“Our members will not be intimidated. We shall remain united and resolute in defending the rights, dignity and welfare of nurses and midwives,” he said.

The KNUN Secretary-General's statement is likely to further intensify calls for dialogue between healthcare workers and authorities as nurses continue to push for better working conditions and improved welfare.
