Residents of Eldoret are set to pay revised water and sewerage charges after the Eldoret Water and Sanitation Company Limited (ELDOWAS) introduced a new tariff structure for the 2026/2027 to 2028/2029 period.

According to a public notice dated August 28, 2026, ELDOWAS Managing Director Dr. Lawrence Tanui said the revised tariffs were effected in line with Gazette Notice No. 13176 dated August 14, 2026.

Under the new structure, domestic consumers will pay Sh84 per cubic metre for consumption of between 1 and 6 cubic metres, with the rate rising progressively to Sh140 per cubic metre for consumption above 300 cubic metres.

Households consuming between 7 and 20 cubic metres will pay Sh95 per cubic metre, while those using 21–50 cubic metres will pay Sh110. Consumption of 51–100 cubic metres will attract Sh117, while users consuming 101–300 cubic metres will pay Sh128 per cubic metre.

Multi-dwelling units will be charged Sh96 per cubic metre.

Commercial and industrial consumers will pay Sh108 per cubic metre for the first 50 cubic metres, Sh115 for 51–100 cubic metres, Sh130 for 101–300 cubic metres and Sh140 for consumption above 300 cubic metres.

Government institutions will be charged at similar rates.

Public schools, colleges and universities will have a separate tariff, paying Sh88 per cubic metre for consumption of up to 600 cubic metres, Sh97 for 601–1,200 cubic metres and Sh109 for consumption above 1,200 cubic metres.

The revised tariff also sets the cost of bulk water at Sh60 per cubic metre, while water kiosks will pay Sh88 per cubic metre.

Sewerage charges revised

ELDOWAS has also revised sewerage charges, with consumers connected to the sewerage system charged at 75 per cent of the volume of water billed, based on the applicable sewerage tariff.

Domestic sewerage charges will range from Sh63 to Sh110 per cubic metre depending on consumption, while multi-dwelling units will pay Sh72 per cubic metre.

Commercial and industrial consumers, as well as government institutions, will pay between Sh83 and Sh110 per cubic metre.

The latest revision follows a prolonged dispute over ELDOWAS tariffs. Residents in Uasin Gishu had previously challenged the 2024 tariff structure in court, leading to the suspension of its implementation.

ELDOWAS said the latest changes followed a further review and the parties' consent to arbitration before the Water Tribunal under Appeal Case No. E006 of 2025.

The company further said the Water Services Regulatory Board (WASREB), exercising its powers under Section 72(1)(b) and (2) of the Water Act, 2016, revoked the tariff structure published under Gazette Notice No. 12825 of 2024.

The new tariff structure is expected to shape water bills for households, businesses and institutions across Eldoret and surrounding areas for the next three financial years.
