Presidential candidate Dr. Reuben Kigame has raised alarm over what he describes as two major disasters Kenya could face in the next two to three months, accusing the government of remaining quiet despite growing risks.

Kigame said the country needs to strengthen its disaster preparedness and take urgent measures to protect citizens from the anticipated effects of heavy rains and a worsening food crisis.

“I desire to see better disaster preparedness in Kenya,” Kigame said, warning that the country is staring at two serious disasters that require immediate intervention.

According to the presidential candidate, the first major threat is the anticipated El Niño rains, which he warned could lead to displacement, loss of lives and destruction of property if adequate preparations are not made in advance.

He called on the government to move swiftly to identify areas at risk of flooding and other rain-related disasters, while putting in place measures to protect vulnerable communities.

Kigame also raised concern over a looming hunger crisis, saying the recent drought in some of Kenya's key food-producing regions could severely affect food availability and household livelihoods.

He estimated that nearly four million Kenyans could be affected by the anticipated food crisis if urgent interventions are not undertaken.

The presidential candidate faulted what he termed the government's silence on the two emerging threats, insisting that disaster management should focus on prevention and preparedness rather than waiting until calamities strike.

He urged national and county governments, humanitarian agencies, farmers, communities and other stakeholders to coordinate their efforts and implement emergency measures before the situation worsens.

Kigame said early interventions could help reduce loss of lives, displacement and destruction of property while cushioning millions of Kenyans from the effects of food shortages.

“I call upon everyone concerned to act swiftly to avert what we can from the two disasters,” he said.

His remarks come as concerns over weather-related disasters and food security continue to dominate public debate, with calls for authorities to strengthen early-warning systems, emergency response capacity and food reserves ahead of potentially difficult months.
