BREAKING: Kaluma Moves to Court Over Explosive Homa Bay Violence Claims
Homa Bay Town MP Hon. George Peter Kaluma is taking legal action against The Standard Group over a publication he says falsely linked him to the violence witnessed in Homa Bay on August 16.
Through his lawyers, P.I. Samba & Company Advocates, Kaluma has issued a formal demand to The Standard Group over two KTN News reports titled “Mikono Ya Damu Homa Bay: Uchaguzi Wapiga” and “Homa Bay Bloody Hands; The Untold Story Behind the August 16 Violence.”
The lawyer's letter accuses the publication of portraying Kaluma as having planned, funded and executed the August 16 violence, including allegedly being responsible for deaths, injuries and destruction of property.
The reports are also alleged to have linked the legislator to meetings where young people were allegedly mobilised and prepared to disrupt a rally in Homa Bay.
According to Kaluma's lawyers, the publication further suggested that their client financed and armed alleged goons and instructed them to prevent people from accessing Homa Bay Town.
Kaluma has rejected the allegations in their entirety, describing the publication as false, malicious and defamatory.
His legal team argues that the reports have damaged his reputation as an elected leader, Member of Parliament and Advocate of the High Court of Kenya, exposing him to ridicule and public condemnation.
The lawyers are demanding that The Standard Group retract the allegations, publish an unequivocal apology with similar prominence and admit liability for defamation.
They have issued a three-day ultimatum for compliance, warning that failure to meet the demands will trigger further legal and disciplinary proceedings.
The dispute now sets the stage for a potentially high-profile defamation case brought by Kaluma against the media organisation, with the truthfulness and basis of the allegations about the August 16 Homa Bay violence likely to come under scrutiny.
The allegations remain disputed and have not been established as facts by a court.
