Ruto Launches Free 922 Emergency Medical Hotline, Guarantees Lifesaving Care for All Kenyans

 President William Ruto has launched the Social Health Authority (SHA) 922 Lifeline and National Ambulance Dispatch Centre, marking a major milestone in Kenya's efforts to provide universal access to emergency medical services.

The new nationwide emergency response system is designed to ensure that every Kenyan can access lifesaving medical care without worrying about the cost, in line with Article 43(2) of the Constitution, which guarantees the right to emergency medical treatment.

Speaking during the launch in Nairobi on Wednesday, President Ruto said the government has put in place a system where the priority in any medical emergency will be saving lives rather than determining a patient's ability to pay.

Under the new arrangement, ambulance evacuation and the first 24 hours of emergency treatment will be financed through the Emergency, Chronic and Critical Illness Fund at approved tariffs. The benefit will be available to all Kenyans regardless of whether they are registered with the Social Health Authority or have made SHA contributions.

The President said the initiative removes financial barriers that have often delayed emergency treatment, emphasizing that no Kenyan should lose their life because they could not afford immediate medical care.

To make the service easily accessible, calls to the emergency number 922 will be free across all mobile networks and can be made even without airtime.

The government has also contracted 1,243 ambulance and emergency service providers under the Social Health Authority, creating the foundation for a coordinated national emergency medical response system capable of serving citizens across the country.

The launch of the 922 Lifeline is expected to improve response times during medical emergencies, strengthen coordination between hospitals and ambulance providers, and enhance access to critical healthcare services nationwide.

The initiative forms part of the Kenya Kwanza administration's broader health sector reforms aimed at achieving Universal Health Coverage by ensuring affordable, accessible and quality healthcare for all Kenyans.
