Nyakera shifts focus to Makadara MP race after Gachagua consultations

Former Principal Secretary Irungu Nyakera has abandoned his bid for the Nairobi gubernatorial seat and shifted his political focus to Makadara Constituency, where he will seek to become Member of Parliament on a Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) ticket.

Mr Nyakera said the decision followed consultations with his political mentors and, more importantly, calls from residents of Makadara urging him to return home and offer himself for the parliamentary seat.

The announcement came after Mr Nyakera, accompanied by a delegation from Makadara, met former Deputy President and DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua at his Wamunyoro home in Nyeri on Monday.

Mr Nyakera thanked Mr Gachagua for his political mentorship, guidance and counsel, saying he was particularly grateful for the former Deputy President's blessing as he embarked on his new political journey.

“After consultations with my political mentors, and more importantly, after listening to the people of Makadara who have asked me to come home and offer myself as their Member of Parliament, I have made the decision to shift my political focus from the Nairobi gubernatorial race to Makadara Constituency,” he said.

Mr Nyakera's move marks a significant change from his earlier plan to contest the Nairobi governor's position under the DCP banner. He had previously indicated that his political role in DCP's Nairobi operations was linked to his gubernatorial ambitions. ([Kenya Times][2])

With his new bid, Mr Nyakera is set to enter an increasingly competitive Makadara political contest ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Announcing his return to the constituency, Mr Nyakera sought to frame the decision as a response to the wishes of local residents.

“My brothers and sisters of Makadara, I have heard you. I am coming back home!” he said.

The declaration is expected to reshape the political landscape in Makadara as aspirants position themselves ahead of the 2027 elections.
