Murkomen Urges Young Leaders to Take Charge of Kenya’s Future, Fight Drugs and Champion National Unity

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has challenged young people to take an active role in shaping Kenya’s future, saying mentorship and leadership development are critical in preparing the next generation of national leaders.

Murkomen spoke after engaging student leaders drawn from universities, Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions and colleges under the Rift Youth Leadership Network.

The CS commended the students for their contribution to their communities and encouraged them to use their leadership positions to promote positive change, peaceful coexistence and national development.

“Mentorship of young people is crucial in preparing the next generation of leaders and shaping the future of our nation,” Murkomen said.

He pledged to support the young leaders as they pursue their aspirations, noting that empowering youth with leadership skills and opportunities would help build a stronger and more responsible generation capable of addressing the country’s challenges.

Murkomen further assured the students that the Ministry of Interior and National Administration would continue working closely with young people to promote safe and secure learning environments across the country.

He identified the fight against drug and substance abuse as one of the key areas requiring stronger collaboration between the government, learning institutions, students and communities.

According to Murkomen, efforts to protect young people from drugs must go hand in hand with strengthening security around educational institutions and creating environments where students can pursue their studies without fear.

The CS also called on students to move beyond academic leadership and actively participate in civic responsibilities, saying the youth have a critical role to play in national conversations and decision-making processes.

He specifically urged the student leaders and their colleagues across the country to participate in the National Conversation on Kenya’s Future Beyond Vision 2030, saying their ideas and perspectives would be important in shaping the country’s long-term development agenda.

Murkomen said Kenya’s future could only be secured through the collective participation of citizens, particularly young people who constitute a significant proportion of the country’s population.

He encouraged the students to embrace peaceful engagement, responsible leadership and national unity, stressing that the country’s prosperity depends on a generation willing to take responsibility for its future.

The meeting comes at a time when the government is intensifying efforts to engage young people on leadership, security, education, drug abuse and national development.

Murkomen maintained that empowering and mentoring youth remains essential to building a peaceful, secure and prosperous Kenya, urging young leaders to use their influence positively in their institutions and communities.

He called for continued collaboration between the government and youth organizations to address challenges facing young people while creating opportunities for them to participate meaningfully in national development.
