Murkomen: 10,000 Police Recruits to Graduate as Ruto Pushes Historic Police Reforms

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has said the government is undertaking major reforms to modernize the National Police Service, improve officers’ welfare and strengthen their capacity to effectively serve Kenyans.

Murkomen spoke at the National Police College in Kiganjo, Nyeri County, where he joined President William Ruto during the 149th Pass-Out Parade of 6,000 newly trained police constables.

The CS said the latest recruitment marks a major milestone for the National Police Service, with an additional 4,000 recruits expected to graduate in the coming weeks.

Once the second group completes training, the number of new police constables graduating from the recruitment exercise will rise to 10,000, making it the largest recruitment in the history of the Service.

Murkomen said the government is investing in modern policing by enhancing training programmes while improving the welfare and working conditions of police officers.

He noted that better-equipped and motivated officers would be better positioned to respond to the changing security needs of the country while maintaining professionalism and respect for the rights of citizens.

The Interior CS attributed the reforms to concerns raised by Kenyans during the Jukwaa La Usalama forums, as well as recommendations contained in the Taskforce on Police Reforms.

He said the government was committed to implementing measures aimed at transforming the National Police Service into a modern, professional and people-centred institution.

According to Murkomen, the new officers have undergone training designed to equip them with the knowledge and skills required to handle emerging security challenges.

He further emphasized the importance of observing the Constitution, particularly the protection of fundamental human rights and freedoms, as the officers begin their careers in the Service.

The CS congratulated the 6,000 graduates and urged them to serve Kenyans with discipline, integrity and professionalism.

The historic recruitment comes as the government seeks to strengthen the country's security infrastructure through increased personnel, improved training and better working conditions for officers.

With another 4,000 recruits expected to graduate soon, the government says the expanded workforce will boost the National Police Service's ability to respond to security needs across the country.
