KNUT Boss Oyuu Warns Teachers Against Abusing Social Media
Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary-General Collins Oyuu has cautioned teachers against misusing social media platforms, urging them to embrace responsible and professional online conduct.
Oyuu said social media has become an increasingly important tool for communication, information sharing and public engagement, allowing people to connect and remain updated on developments locally and globally.
However, the KNUT boss warned teachers against using the platforms to insult, abuse, harass or deliberately harm other people.
He said teachers, as professionals and role models in society, should understand that their conduct online can have an impact on their reputation and the teaching profession.
Oyuu urged teachers to use social media constructively, including sharing educational content, creating awareness, exchanging ideas and engaging in conversations that contribute positively to society.
He emphasized the need for teachers to exercise restraint and respect when expressing their views online, regardless of their differences with other individuals or groups.
According to Oyuu, freedom of expression on social media should be accompanied by responsibility and respect for other people's rights and dignity.
The union leader further encouraged teachers to maintain the same level of professionalism expected of them in schools and workplaces when interacting on digital platforms.
His remarks come amid growing concerns over the misuse of social media, with cases of online insults, harassment, misinformation and personal attacks increasingly becoming common across various platforms.
Oyuu maintained that social media can be a powerful tool for positive change when used responsibly, urging teachers to lead by example both online and offline.
He called on members of the teaching profession to protect their image and uphold the values of professionalism, respect and responsibility whenever they engage with the public on social media.
