Women Senators Association Chairperson Veronica Maina Champions Implementation of the Two-Thirds Gender Rule
Kenya Women Senators Association (KEWOSA) Chairperson and nominated Senator Veronica Maina has reaffirmed the urgent need to fully implement the Constitution's Two-Thirds Gender Rule, calling for decisive legislative action ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Speaking during the Legislative Forum on Taking Stock of the Two-Thirds Gender Rule, Senator Maina joined fellow legislators, civil society organizations, development partners, and media stakeholders in reviewing progress made, assessing constitutional reform proposals, and charting a practical path towards achieving gender equality in elective leadership.
The forum emphasized that the Constitution provides a clear roadmap for inclusive governance and that the time has come to translate constitutional commitments into meaningful legislative reforms that guarantee fair representation for women in Kenya's political institutions.
Senator Veronica Maina underscored that women's leadership is not merely about meeting constitutional thresholds but about strengthening democracy, enhancing accountability, and improving the quality of public policy through diverse perspectives and inclusive decision-making.
She noted that a truly representative Parliament is better equipped to address the needs and aspirations of all Kenyans while promoting equitable and sustainable national development.
The Chairperson further observed that achieving the Two-Thirds Gender Rule requires more than legislative amendments. She called for concerted efforts to eliminate barriers that continue to hinder women's political participation, including political violence, financial constraints, online harassment, inadequate support from political parties, and harmful cultural and social norms.
Senator Maina reiterated the Association's commitment to working closely with Parliament, political parties, civil society, development partners, the media, and citizens to build consensus around a practical implementation framework that upholds the constitutional promise of equality and equal opportunity.
Her steadfast advocacy continues to position her as one of Kenya's leading champions for women's political empowerment, inclusive governance, and constitutionalism. Through her leadership, Veronica Maina remains committed to ensuring that women have an equal opportunity to participate in shaping the country's future and strengthening Kenya's democratic institutions.
