The opposition's Linda Mwananchi brigade on Sunday intensified its push to win over Western Kenya, taking its second day of political rallies through Trans Nzoia and Bungoma counties in what is shaping up to be an early contest for one of the country's most influential voting blocs ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The day's activities began with a 7:00 a.m. Mass at the Immaculate Cathedral in Kitale before the leaders embarked on a road tour with stopovers in Kiminini, Kamukuywa, Kimilili and Chwele, attracting large crowds at every trading centre.

The tour is expected to culminate in a mega rally at the historic Posta Grounds in Bungoma Town, a venue regarded as politically symbolic in a county that has long been associated with National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang'ula and Ford Kenya.

The Western Kenya campaign comes days after the movement concluded a similar series of rallies in Taita Taveta County, shifting its attention to a region increasingly viewed as a decisive battleground in the race to State House.

Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya, who is coordinating the Linda Mwananchi campaign alongside his Tawe Movement, hosted the opposition leaders, among them Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, former Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza, former Vihiga Governor Rev. Wilberforce Akaranga and former Bungoma Governor Wycliffe Wangamati.

Addressing residents in Kiminini, Kamukuywa, Kimilili and Chwele, Natembeya declared that the opposition would continue campaigning against the broad-based government, insisting that Kenyans were demanding political change.

He maintained that Western Kenya would play a decisive role in determining the country's next leadership, arguing that the region should no longer merely produce votes for other political leaders but should also produce a presidential candidate.

Natembeya dismissed claims by Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi and Speaker Moses Wetang'ula that the region had firmly rallied behind President William Ruto's re-election bid, saying the political landscape was rapidly changing.

Western Kenya remains one of Kenya's largest voting blocs, with the counties of Bungoma, Kakamega, Busia, Vihiga and Trans Nzoia accounting for more than three million registered voters. Political leaders believe that number could rise significantly by the time Kenyans head to the polls in 2027, making the region a critical battleground for any presidential contender.

Suba South MP Caroli Omondi, who serves as the Linda Mwananchi spokesperson, urged residents of the Mulembe Nation to rally behind Senator Edwin Sifuna, describing him as a leader capable of uniting the opposition.

Omondi praised Governor Natembeya for what he termed a selfless decision to back Sifuna, saying the region needed to unite behind one candidate if it hoped to increase its bargaining power in national politics.

The latest campaign follows voting patterns witnessed during the 2022 General Election, when ODM leader Raila Odinga won overwhelmingly in Kakamega, Vihiga, Busia and Trans Nzoia, while President William Ruto made significant inroads in Bungoma through his alliance with Ford Kenya leader Moses Wetang'ula.

Those results demonstrated that while ODM retained considerable influence in Western Kenya, Kenya Kwanza had established a foothold that has since become the focus of renewed political competition.

The opposition's latest charm offensive comes as President Ruto continues his own engagements across the region, including Sunday's attendance at an Anglican Church of Kenya ordination ceremony in Katakwa, Teso. The President has also hosted several Western Kenya leaders at State House in recent months as he seeks to consolidate support ahead of the next election.

Speaking in Kimilili, Senator Sifuna told residents that the opposition was determined to offer Kenyans an alternative leadership, arguing that Linda Mwananchi represented the country's genuine opposition movement.

He criticized government policies, including the Affordable Housing Programme and the Social Health Authority (SHA), while urging residents to register as voters and support the opposition in the next General Election.

Sifuna told supporters that the movement had deliberately concentrated its campaigns in regions with large voter populations, saying winning Western Kenya would be crucial in determining the outcome of the presidential race.

Political analyst John Wanyama described the planned Bungoma rally as more than an ordinary political gathering, saying it signals an escalating battle for influence in a region whose votes could prove decisive in 2027.

According to Wanyama, the decision by Linda Mwananchi leaders to hold a major rally at Bungoma's Posta Grounds carries political symbolism, reflecting the opposition's determination to challenge established political dominance in Western Kenya as the race toward the 2027 General Election gathers momentum.
