Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya on Saturday led a massive Linda Mwananchi rally in Kitale, where opposition leaders intensified calls for unity ahead of the 2027 General Election and declared that President William Ruto could be defeated by a united opposition.

The high-energy rally at Mwangaza Grounds attracted thousands of supporters after a day-long political tour across Trans Nzoia County. The leaders were first received by Governor Natembeya in Soy before holding roadside rallies in Matunda, Moi's Bridge and Sibanga in Cherang'any Constituency, the home of multiparty democracy icon the late Masinde Muliro.

Addressing supporters in Kitale, the leaders maintained that opposition parties must set aside their differences and field a single presidential candidate to challenge President Ruto and the Kenya Kwanza administration in 2027.

Although discussions are ongoing on who should carry the opposition flag, leaders said unity remains their primary objective, with consultations expected to continue among various opposition formations.

Governor Natembeya declared that President Ruto would become Kenya's first one-term president since the return of multiparty democracy, arguing that widespread public dissatisfaction over the government's performance would outweigh the advantages of incumbency.

"The Constitution gives Kenyans the opportunity to evaluate leaders after five years. No leader should imagine that they cannot be voted out. The people will make that decision based on performance," Natembeya told cheering supporters.

He dismissed claims by Kenya Kwanza leaders that President Ruto was assured of re-election, saying the opposition was steadily consolidating support across different regions.

According to the Trans Nzoia governor, Western Kenya is working alongside other regions to build a broad national coalition capable of mounting a formidable challenge against the ruling alliance in the next General Election.

Natembeya also cited recent political developments in Ol Kalou as evidence that voters were increasingly willing to reject candidates associated with the ruling coalition.

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna defended the Linda Mwananchi movement's recently launched paybill, insisting that the initiative is funded entirely by ordinary Kenyans through small voluntary contributions.

Sifuna dismissed allegations that wealthy individuals or powerful political financiers were secretly sponsoring the movement, saying its strength lies in grassroots support.

He said contributions of as little as KSh10 or KSh20 from ordinary citizens demonstrated that political movements could be sustained without dependence on billionaires or cartels.

The senator further pledged full transparency in the management of all funds collected through the paybill, explaining that it was registered under his personal name because Linda Mwananchi is currently a civic movement rather than a registered political party.

Sifuna also praised Governor Natembeya for what he described as a major political sacrifice after the governor announced he had shelved his own presidential ambitions to support Sifuna's 2027 presidential bid.

"I thank Governor George Natembeya for putting the interests of the movement first. Such sacrifice is what builds strong national leadership," Sifuna said.

Natembeya said leaders from the Mulembe nation must be willing to make difficult decisions for the sake of unity, adding that supporting Sifuna was aimed at strengthening the opposition's chances in 2027.

Siaya Governor James Orengo lauded Natembeya's decision, describing it as an act of political maturity and genuine brotherhood.

Orengo further thanked the Luhya community for its longstanding relationship with the Luo community, saying it was time to reciprocate the solidarity shown by the late Masinde Muliro and the late Kijana Wamalwa to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga and Raila Odinga over the years.

Several leaders echoed calls for opposition unity, including former Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza, former Vihiga Governor Moses Akaranga, Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale, Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, Kabuchai MP Majimbo Kalasinga, Bumula MP Wanami Wamboka, Cherang'any MP Patrick Simiyu, Suba South MP Caroli Omondi, Kitutu Chache North MP Japheth Nyakundi Gibagendi, Funyula MP Wilberforce Oundo, Mavoko MP Patrick Makau, Kaiti MP Joshua Kimilu, Wundanyi MP Danstan Mwashako, Kitutu Masaba MP Clive Gisairo, Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka, former MPs Justus Kizito Mukali and Silverse Anami, as well as political strategist Pauline Njoroge.

The leaders urged supporters to continue mobilizing at the grassroots as consultations continue on the formation of a united opposition coalition.

The Linda Mwananchi caravan is expected to continue its Western Kenya tour on Sunday after attending a church service in Trans Nzoia. The team will then make stopovers in Kiminini, Sikhendu, Kamukuywa and Chwele before culminating the day's activities with a major rally at the historic Posta Grounds in Bungoma Town, a political stronghold associated with National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang'ula.
