ROOTS AND RECONNECTION' CAUCUS URGES KENYANS TO EMBRACE CULTURE AS MAASAI MAN RECLAIMS IDENTITY THROUGH DNA

There is a renewed call for Kenyans and people of African descent globally to embrace and celebrate their heritage, as a cultural movement seeks to restore identity, dignity, and belonging.

The Roots and Reconnection Caucus, under the leadership of Dr. Lisa Aubrey, Founder and Director, held a brief ceremony this week to mark what members described as “a homecoming of the spirit.” At the center of it was Willie Hine, a man of Maasai descent who learned through a DNA test that he is 100 percent Kenyan Maasai.

 A result that gave him a name

For Hine, the DNA result was more than science. It was confirmation of lineage, community, and culture.  

“This DNA result is not just numbers. It is my name, my clan, my culture. I am Maasai, and I am proud to walk back into the embrace of my people,” Hine said during the ceremony.

Dr. Aubrey said Hine’s story reflects the experience of thousands who have been disconnected from their roots through migration, displacement, and time.  

“This is not just about Willie. This is about all of us who are searching to understand where we come from so we can know who we are,” she noted.

Why embracing culture matters now

According to _Roots and Reconnection_, culture is not a relic of the past but a foundation for the future.  

“There is a need for people to embrace their culture. Our languages, our rites of passage, our values, and our stories are what hold communities together,”*l Dr. Aubrey stated.  

The caucus argues that cultural reconnection strengthens mental well-being, community cohesion, and economic opportunity through heritage tourism, art, and intergenerational knowledge transfer.

The group is working to link members of the diaspora with communities in Kenya, document oral histories with elders, and create platforms for cultural education and exchange.

A call to come home

Dr. Aubrey told those gathered that identity is a right, not a privilege.  

“Knowing where you come from is the first step to knowing who you are. When we reconnect to our roots, we heal, we empower, and we build stronger nations,” she said.

The _Roots and Reconnection_ caucus says it will continue partnering with cultural custodians and institutions to ensure more people like Willie Hine can trace, claim, and live their heritage with pride.
