Farmers in Uasin Gishu County have been urged to embrace modern farming methods, diversify production and invest in high-value crops to increase household incomes and improve livelihoods.

Speaking during a Mass at Kabuliot Catholic Church in Moiben Sub-County, Principal Secretary for the National Treasury, Dr Chris Kiptoo, called on farmers to reduce overdependence on maize farming and consider crops such as avocado, macadamia and coffee.

Dr Kiptoo said agricultural diversification would help farmers access new markets, reduce risks associated with crop failure and create more reliable sources of income.

“We must embrace a culture of hard work and self-reliance. Instead of depending on handouts from politicians, let us invest in productive activities that will improve our livelihoods and secure a better future for our families,” he said.

The PS also encouraged farmers to improve livestock breeds in order to raise milk production and increase earnings from dairy farming.

“I urge our farmers to improve their livestock breeds and embrace high-value crops such as avocado, macadamia and coffee. Agricultural diversification is the surest way to increase incomes and transform the economic well-being of our communities,” Dr Kiptoo added.

He said the government was planning to rehabilitate and desilt dams and other water sources to improve access to clean water in the area.

According to Dr Kiptoo, the water projects will ease the burden on women and children who often travel long distances in search of water for domestic use.

The PS further urged households to adopt cleaner cooking energy, including liquefied petroleum gas and electricity, to reduce indoor air pollution and protect the environment.

Elgeyo Marakwet Governor Wisley Rotich supported the call for crop diversification, saying farmers should embrace profitable agricultural ventures to boost productivity and household incomes.

Meanwhile, Kericho Senator Aaron Cheruiyot and Uasin Gishu Senator Jackson Mandago defended the Senate’s oversight role and called on leaders to work together to speed up development across the country.
