KNQA Pushes TVET Revolution, Calls for Recognition of Informal Skills

The Kenya National Qualifications Authority has intensified efforts to transform skills acquired through technical training and informal work into recognised national qualifications.

Speaking during the Nyandarua County Strategic NGAO and TVET Consultative Forum hosted at The Nyandarua National Polytechnic, KNQA Director General and Chief Executive Officer Dr. Alice Kande said the authority is committed to ensuring every qualification receives value, recognition and dignity through the Kenya National Qualifications Framework.

The forum was attended by Principal Secretary for the State Department for TVET Dr. Esther Muoria, who highlighted the ongoing transformation in Kenya’s technical and vocational education sector and the role of grassroots administrators in empowering young people.

Dr. Kande said KNQA is focusing on three major reforms aimed at strengthening TVET pathways, recognising practical skills and protecting learners from fake institutions.

She said the authority is working to change public perception that TVET qualifications are inferior or terminal, noting that technical training provides a strong pathway for career growth, employment and progression to higher academic levels.

“TVET is not a dead end. It is a powerful route to decent work, entrepreneurship and further education,” she said.

The KNQA boss also underscored the importance of Recognition of Prior Learning, which allows skilled workers in the informal sector to have their competencies assessed, certified and entered into the national qualifications database.

Through the programme, Jua Kali artisans, mechanics, technicians, fashion designers and other skilled workers can receive formal recognition for skills gained through years of hands-on experience.

Dr. Kande further warned parents and students against enrolling in unaccredited institutions, saying KNQA is strengthening systems to eliminate fake certificates and protect families from fraudulent colleges.

She urged National Government Administrative Officers to become ambassadors of skills by promoting TVET opportunities, encouraging skilled workers to pursue Recognition of Prior Learning certification and guiding young people to verify institutions through the KNQA registry before enrolling.
