KEBS Awards Kenya Ports Authority Three ISO Certifications, Strengthening Port Safety, Quality and Environmental Standards

The Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) has achieved a major milestone after receiving two new internationally recognized ISO certifications and renewing a third from the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS), reinforcing its commitment to quality service, environmental sustainability and workplace safety at the Port of Mombasa.

The certifications were presented by KEBS Managing Director Esther Ngari, EBS, to KPA Managing Director Capt. William Ruto during a ceremony highlighting the two institutions' collaboration in promoting standards-driven excellence within Kenya's maritime and blue economy sectors.

KPA was awarded ISO 14001:2015 for Environmental Management Systems and ISO 45001:2018 for Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems. The authority also successfully retained its ISO 9001:2015 certification for Quality Management Systems.

The internationally recognized certifications affirm KPA's compliance with global best practices in environmental protection, occupational health and safety, and quality management, positioning the Port of Mombasa among leading ports committed to operational excellence.

Speaking during the presentation, KEBS Managing Director Esther Ngari said the bureau remains committed to supporting public institutions in adopting international standards that enhance efficiency, competitiveness and sustainable development.

She noted that the certifications reflect KPA's unwavering commitment to continuous improvement and delivering world-class services to customers and stakeholders.

The achievement is expected to translate into significant benefits for Kenya's economy by improving cargo handling efficiency, minimizing operational delays, strengthening supply chains and facilitating regional and international trade.

The certifications also reinforce environmental protection measures aimed at safeguarding marine ecosystems, preserving coastal livelihoods and supporting the tourism industry, while enhancing occupational health and safety for thousands of employees working within the Port of Mombasa.

Following the award ceremony, the KEBS delegation toured the Port's Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) Centre, where they received a briefing on the advanced technologies used to monitor and coordinate maritime traffic, enhancing navigational safety at one of East Africa's busiest seaports.

Under the leadership of Managing Director Esther Ngari, KEBS has continued to champion the adoption of international standards, quality assurance and institutional excellence, strengthening Kenya's competitiveness in regional and global trade while supporting the country's growing blue economy.
