Hundreds of Children Receive Free Disability Screening as Uasin Gishu Partners with CURE Kenya

Hundreds of children and adults living with physical disabilities on Thursday benefited from a free specialized medical screening camp at the ACK Rehabilitation Centre in Eldoret, in an initiative aimed at improving access to life-changing orthopedic and reconstructive healthcare.

The outreach, spearheaded by Uasin Gishu County Chief Officer for Clinical Services Ambrose Tarus, was organized through a partnership between the Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK) and AIC-CURE Children's Hospital of Kenya. The exercise brought a team of orthopedic and plastic surgeons to Eldoret to assess patients at no cost.

Speaking during the exercise, Tarus said the county government remains committed to bringing quality specialized healthcare closer to residents through partnerships with healthcare institutions.

He praised the collaboration with CURE Kenya, saying such partnerships are crucial in strengthening devolved healthcare services while improving early diagnosis and treatment of congenital and physical disabilities.

The medical camp offered comprehensive assessments for patients suffering from conditions including clubfoot, bowed legs, knock knees, cleft lips, amputations, burn contractures, and other physical deformities that often leave families facing significant medical and financial challenges.

Organizers noted that all consultations during the outreach were offered free of charge. Patients identified as requiring corrective surgery will receive fully funded treatment at CURE Children's Hospital in Kijabe, including surgery, hospitalization, accommodation, and rehabilitation.

The initiative brought hope to hundreds of families from across the North Rift region, many of whom have struggled for years to access specialized medical care due to high treatment costs.

As the screening exercise concluded, county officials and healthcare partners urged parents and guardians who were unable to attend to seek follow-up assistance through the available outreach coordination desks to ensure family members living with treatable physical disabilities are linked to the necessary care.

The county government said it will continue working with healthcare partners to expand access to specialized services and improve the quality of life for people living with disabilities across Uasin Gishu County.
