Gachagua Accuses Ruto of Losing Control as He Condemns Alleged Police-Goons Link
In a strongly worded statement, Gachagua questioned President Ruto's directive to security agencies to deal firmly with goons and criminals across the country, arguing that similar calls had been made before without addressing what he described as the deeper security challenges facing Kenya.
Gachagua alleged that the country's security crisis was not primarily caused by ordinary goons but by what he claimed were rogue police officers allegedly working together with criminal groups to intimidate and terrorise citizens.
He directly blamed Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen and Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo, accusing the two officials of failing in their responsibility to protect Kenyans and alleging that security agencies had been politicised.
The former Deputy President further questioned whether President Ruto was aware of what was happening in the country or whether security operations were being conducted with his knowledge and authority.
Gachagua cited the recent Ol Kalou by-election as an example, alleging that heavily armed individuals and groups linked to security operations were involved in violence during the electoral period.
He claimed that more than 2,000 police officers, alongside units from the General Service Unit (GSU) and Anti-Stock Theft Unit (ASTU), had been deployed to the area, but alleged that violence still occurred.
According to Gachagua, plain-clothed and armed individuals allegedly engaged in acts of violence and intimidation, while uniformed security officers were unable to intervene effectively.
He further alleged that the incident resulted in deaths and injuries and claimed that several women were sexually assaulted.
The former Deputy President also questioned why, several days after the alleged incidents, no arrests had been made, claiming that individuals responsible for the violence were being protected by senior government officials.
Gachagua further linked the alleged violence in Ol Kalou to previous incidents, including an attack at Witima ACK Church, claiming that the same individuals or networks were involved in both incidents.
He called for investigations into the allegations and demanded accountability from the government and security agencies.
Gachagua also accused the administration of undermining the independence and professionalism of the National Police Service, claiming that some officers were being used for political purposes instead of focusing on their constitutional mandate of protecting citizens and maintaining law and order.
He warned that the alleged breakdown in security could have wider consequences for Kenya's economy, tourism and investment, arguing that the country cannot attract tourists and investors if citizens feel unsafe.
The former Deputy President's remarks come amid heightened political tensions and growing debate over the conduct of security agencies during political events and electoral contests.
His allegations, however, remain claims that require independent investigation and verification by the relevant authorities.
Gachagua called on President Ruto to take responsibility for the country's security situation and ensure that security agencies operate within the law and remain accountable to the Kenyan people.
He maintained that the government must move beyond public declarations and take concrete steps to address allegations of police misconduct, political violence and the involvement of criminal groups in political activities.
The former Deputy President's statement is likely to intensify the ongoing political debate surrounding the 2027 General Election, with opposition leaders and government critics increasingly raising concerns over security, political violence and the role of state agencies in electoral politics.
Gachagua's latest remarks further deepen his criticism of the Ruto administration as political realignments continue ahead of the next General Election.
