Elgon TV Journalists Allegedly Assaulted During Live Broadcast

 Journalists from Elgon TV Kenya were allegedly assaulted while conducting a live interview in Kimilili after covering a concurrent Linda Mwananchi Movement press briefing, in an incident that has sparked fresh concerns over the safety of media practitioners and press freedom in the country.

According to a statement issued by the media house, the attack occurred as its crew was carrying out a live broadcast in the course of their professional duties. Elgon TV claimed that the assault was carried out by Kimilili parliamentary aspirant Hon. Abdulaziz Mulama and a group of individuals accompanying him.

The station condemned the incident, describing it as a direct attack not only on its journalists but also on the constitutional principles of freedom of the press, freedom of expression, and the public's right to access information.

The media house called on security agencies to launch immediate investigations into the incident and ensure those responsible are brought to justice.

"Violence, intimidation and attacks against journalists have no place in a democratic society," the statement said.

The alleged assault comes amid heightened political activity across the country, with journalists increasingly covering rival political events and public gatherings ahead of future electoral contests.

Media stakeholders have repeatedly raised concerns over the growing number of attacks targeting journalists while on assignment, urging political leaders and their supporters to respect the role of the press in informing the public.

The incident is expected to draw attention from the Media Council of Kenya, the Kenya Union of Journalists, and other press freedom organizations, which have consistently condemned violence and intimidation directed at media workers.

Authorities had not issued an official statement on the incident by the time of publication, while the allegations against Hon. Abdulaziz Mulama had not been independently verified.
