𝗡𝗣𝗦 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗔𝗙𝗙𝗢𝗥𝗗𝗔𝗕𝗟𝗘 𝗛𝗢𝗨𝗦𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗕𝗢𝗔𝗥𝗗 𝗔𝗗𝗩𝗔𝗡𝗖𝗘 𝗣𝗟𝗔𝗡 𝗧𝗢 𝗜𝗠𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗩𝗘 𝗣𝗢𝗟𝗜𝗖𝗘 𝗛𝗢𝗨𝗦𝗜𝗡𝗚

The Inspector General of the National Police Service, Mr. Douglas Kanja, today 29th July 2026, led renewed efforts to enhance the welfare of police officers through improved access to quality and affordable housing, following a meeting with the Principal Secretary, State Department for Housing and Urban Development, Mr. Charles M. Hinga, and members of the Affordable Housing Board (AHB) at the National Police Service Headquarters.

The engagement focused on expanding opportunities for police officers to leverage the Affordable Housing Programme, while complementing ongoing investments in institutional housing to provide safe, dignified and conducive living environments for officers and their families.

IG Kanja reaffirmed that the welfare of police officers remains a key priority of the Service, observing that access to quality housing is fundamental to building a motivated, productive and professional police service. He expressed appreciation to the Government for prioritising police welfare through the Affordable Housing Programme, describing it as a transformative investment that will improve the quality of life of officers while strengthening operational effectiveness and enhancing service delivery across the country.

The Inspector General further committed to ensuring that officers across the Service are adequately sensitised to the programme, to enable them to fully understand the process and the long-term social and economic benefits it offers. He encouraged officers to take advantage of the initiative as the Government continues to expand opportunities for homeownership alongside investments in institutional housing.

Speaking during the meeting, Principal Secretary Hinga emphasised that honouring the men and women who safeguard the nation begins with ensuring they live in dignified and secure homes. He noted that the Affordable Housing Board is working closely with the National Police Service to ensure officers fully benefit from the programme through increased access to affordable homes, while supporting the Government's broader agenda of improving police welfare. He added that approximately 45,000 affordable housing units are expected to be ready by December, presenting a significant opportunity for officers to become homeowners.

The Affordable Housing Board is mandated to manage the Affordable Housing Fund, oversee the development and uptake of affordable housing programmes and projects, promote institutional housing, and facilitate the development of supporting social and physical infrastructure.
