RVTTI Turns World Sickle Cell Day Into Major Blood Drive as Madam Loice Kutoh Champions Lifesaving Community Health Partnerships

The Rift Valley Technical Training Institute (RVTTI) marked World Sickle Cell Day with a large-scale blood donation drive that brought together students, staff, and health partners in a coordinated effort to support national healthcare systems and raise awareness on sickle cell disease.

The event, held within the institution’s grounds, focused on strengthening voluntary blood donation and highlighting the urgent need for safe and sufficient blood supply in hospitals across the country. It formed part of RVTTI’s broader commitment to community engagement and social responsibility beyond technical training.

Speaking during the drive, the Chief Principal of Rift Valley Technical Training Institute, Madam Loice Kutoh, reaffirmed the institution’s dedication to supporting healthcare initiatives through strategic collaboration with major hospitals and medical partners.

She emphasized that blood donation remains one of the most powerful acts of service, noting that a single pint of blood can save multiple lives, particularly for patients living with sickle cell disease, accident victims, mothers during childbirth complications, and surgical emergencies.

“Blood donation is not just a medical need—it is a humanitarian responsibility,” she noted, urging students and members of the public to embrace regular voluntary donation as a culture rather than a one-time activity.

The drive was held in recognition of World Sickle Cell Day, a global health observance dedicated to increasing awareness about sickle cell disease, a genetic blood disorder that continues to affect thousands of families in Kenya and beyond.

Health professionals present at the event guided participants through the donation process, provided medical screenings, and educated attendees on safe donation practices and the importance of maintaining healthy lifestyles to support blood production.

Madam Kutoh further highlighted RVTTI’s long-term vision of integrating technical education with community service, stating that institutions of higher learning must play a proactive role in addressing societal challenges, including public health emergencies.

She also praised the participation of students, describing their involvement as a strong demonstration of civic responsibility and compassion. According to her, such engagements help shape not only skilled graduates but also socially conscious citizens.

The event also underscored ongoing collaboration between RVTTI and healthcare institutions, with the goal of strengthening emergency response systems through consistent blood donation programs and awareness campaigns.

Organizers noted that the turnout reflected growing awareness among young people about the importance of voluntary blood donation, especially in supporting patients with chronic conditions like sickle cell disease, which often requires frequent transfusions.

Beyond the donation exercise, the institution used the occasion to educate participants on prevention, early diagnosis, and management of sickle cell disease, encouraging families to seek medical guidance and screening services where necessary.

The drive concluded with a renewed call for sustained partnerships between educational institutions, healthcare providers, and the public to ensure that no patient loses life due to lack of blood.

RVTTI encouraged the public to stay engaged with its outreach activities and future campaigns through its official platforms: TikTok @RVTTI Official, Facebook RVTTI, and X (Twitter) RVTTI, where updates on community programs and institutional news will continue to be shared.
