ORENGO BLASTS SIFUNA’S REMOVAL FROM ENERGY COMMITTEE, TERMS MOVE A PLOT TO PROTECT VESTED INTERESTS

Siaya Governor James Orengo has strongly condemned the removal of Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna from the Senate Energy Committee, describing the decision as a calculated attempt to shield powerful political and business interests at the expense of ordinary Kenyans.

In a sharply worded statement, Orengo said the move was not only misguided but also contrary to the national interest, arguing that Sifuna’s ouster was designed to silence leaders who have consistently questioned key decisions affecting the energy sector and public resources.

According to the veteran politician, the decision reflects growing intolerance toward independent voices within political and governance structures. He maintained that Sifuna’s removal would not deter leaders committed to transparency, accountability, and the protection of public interests.

“This is a blatant attempt to protect selfish political and business interests. It is a temporary and futile exercise. It is an act against the national interests of Kenyans,” Orengo said.

The governor insisted that parliamentary and senate committees exist to safeguard public welfare and provide oversight on critical sectors, adding that removing members based on their political positions undermines democratic principles and weakens institutional independence.

Orengo further argued that leaders should be evaluated on their performance and commitment to public service rather than their willingness to conform to political expectations. He warned that actions perceived as targeting dissenting voices could erode public confidence in governance institutions.

The controversy surrounding Sifuna's removal comes amid heightened political tensions within opposition circles and ongoing debates over the direction of key political parties ahead of the 2027 General Election. The Nairobi Senator has recently found himself at the center of several political disputes, including internal party wrangles that have exposed divisions among senior leaders.

Political analysts say the latest development is likely to fuel further debate about the role of parliamentary committees and whether political considerations are increasingly influencing appointments and removals in oversight institutions.

Supporters of Sifuna have rallied behind him, arguing that his vocal stance on governance and accountability issues has made him a target of powerful interests. Critics, however, maintain that committee assignments remain the prerogative of parliamentary leadership.

Despite the setback, Orengo expressed confidence that the move would not achieve its intended objective, insisting that public scrutiny over the energy sector and other national issues would continue unabated.

As political temperatures continue to rise, the dispute is expected to intensify discussions on accountability, democratic space, and the independence of legislative oversight bodies in Kenya.
