Koskei Rallies Public Sector to Deliver Results as National Productivity Conference Opens in Nairobi

The government has challenged public institutions to shift their focus from processes and bureaucracy to tangible results that improve the lives of Kenyans, as the three-day National Productivity and Performance Conference 2026 officially opened at the Kenya School of Government (KSG), Lower Kabete.

The conference, convened by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) under the theme “Productivity for Fiscal Sustainability and Effective Service Delivery,” has brought together senior government officials, governors, development partners, academia, and private sector leaders to discuss strategies for enhancing productivity across the public sector.

Speaking during the official opening ceremony, Chief of Staff and Head of Public Service Felix Koskei emphasized that government performance should ultimately be measured by the impact felt by citizens rather than administrative activities.

"Government will ultimately be judged not by the number of meetings held, reports produced, or processes completed, but by the improvements citizens experience in their daily lives," Koskei said.

He called on public institutions to embrace efficiency, accountability, and innovation in service delivery to ensure prudent use of public resources while meeting the expectations of wananchi.

In his welcoming remarks, Prof. Nura Mohamed, Director General of the Kenya School of Government, underscored the critical role of leadership and capacity development in driving productivity and organizational performance.

Prof. Mohamed noted that strengthening leadership skills, investing in workforce development, and enhancing institutional effectiveness are essential for building a productive public service capable of supporting Kenya's development agenda.

The conference has attracted a high-profile delegation, including Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi, who also serves as Chairperson of the Council of Governors, Principal Secretaries, Chairpersons and Chief Executive Officers of Constitutional Commissions and Independent Offices, Governors, Deputy Governors, County Executive Committee Members, Vice Chancellors, researchers, development partners, private sector representatives, and senior officials from both the National and County Governments.

Participants are expected to deliberate on practical approaches to improving public sector productivity, enhancing fiscal sustainability, and strengthening service delivery mechanisms amid growing demands for efficient governance.

The forum is expected to generate policy recommendations and collaborative strategies aimed at fostering a performance-driven culture within government institutions, ultimately translating into better services and improved outcomes for citizens across the country.
