GOVERNOR JONATHAN BII HAILS WIDOWS AS UASIN GISHU EXPANDS SUPPORT PROGRAMMES FOR VULNERABLE FAMILIES
Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii has reaffirmed his administration's commitment to empowering widows and vulnerable households through targeted development programmes aimed at improving livelihoods, education, nutrition, and access to essential services.
Speaking during the colourful commemoration of International Widows’ Day at the County Headquarters, Governor Bii praised widows for their resilience, sacrifice, and invaluable contribution to families and communities across the County of Champions.
The governor said the event was a reflection of the county government's appreciation and recognition of widows, who continue to play a critical role in shaping society despite facing numerous social and economic challenges.
"Today’s colourful commemoration of International Widows’ Day reflects our deep appreciation and recognition of the widows of our County of Champions. Their resilience, determination, and strength continue to inspire us every day," said Governor Bii.
He emphasized that his administration remains committed to building an inclusive society where widows can live with dignity, hope, and economic independence.
As part of the county's efforts to support vulnerable families, Governor Bii highlighted the recent disbursement of KSh186.5 million in bursaries, which benefited thousands of learners from disadvantaged backgrounds and ensured uninterrupted access to education.
He noted that education remains a key pillar in breaking the cycle of poverty and creating opportunities for future generations.
The governor also pointed to the success of the Koti Moja Milk Programme, which provides milk to more than 40,000 learners every Tuesday and Thursday. The initiative aims to improve nutrition among school-going children while supporting vulnerable households across the county.
In addition, Governor Bii cited the ongoing Stima Mashinani initiative as a transformative programme that is expanding access to electricity and unlocking economic opportunities in rural areas.
According to the governor, the first phase of the project successfully connected six schemes, while the second phase currently underway is expected to benefit more than 16,500 residents.
He said the programme is helping improve livelihoods, stimulate local economic growth, and ensure that widows and other vulnerable groups are not left behind in the county's development agenda.
Governor Bii reiterated his government's resolve to continue implementing people-centered programmes that uplift marginalized groups and promote social inclusion, affirming that widows will remain a key focus in the county's development plans.
The International Widows’ Day celebrations brought together widows, community leaders, county officials, and stakeholders who called for greater support and empowerment initiatives to improve the welfare of widows and their families.
