Breakthrough in Turkana as Resident Voluntarily Surrenders AK-47 During Peaceful Disarmament Exercise

Security agencies have recorded a significant breakthrough in the ongoing peaceful disarmament exercise in Turkana County after a resident voluntarily surrendered an AK-47 rifle, highlighting growing cooperation between local communities and law enforcement authorities.

The National Police Service (NPS), working in collaboration with other security agencies, said the intelligence-led operation is continuing across various parts of the county as part of efforts to enhance security and promote lasting peace.

According to police, the firearm was voluntarily handed over by a resident of Lokwamosing Village in Lochakula Location, Turkana East Sub-County, following sustained community engagement and sensitisation campaigns spearheaded by security agencies.

Authorities described the development as a positive indicator that public awareness initiatives are beginning to bear fruit, with more residents embracing efforts to rid communities of illegal firearms.

"The voluntary surrender of the weapon demonstrates the growing trust and cooperation between local communities and security agencies in the region," the National Police Service said in a statement.

Police commended residents for supporting the exercise and encouraged members of the public to continue sharing information that could assist in the recovery of additional illicit weapons.

Security officials noted that illegal firearms have for years contributed to insecurity, cattle rustling, and violent conflicts in parts of the North Rift region. They emphasized that voluntary disarmament remains one of the most effective approaches to reducing violence while strengthening relations between communities and law enforcement agencies.

The NPS reaffirmed its commitment to intensifying public sensitisation and awareness campaigns aimed at encouraging more individuals to surrender illegal firearms without fear.

Authorities said the exercise is part of broader efforts to create a secure environment, protect lives and property, and support sustainable peace and socio-economic development across Turkana County.

The government has repeatedly stressed that community participation remains critical to the success of the disarmament programme, with officials expressing optimism that continued cooperation will lead to the recovery of more illegal weapons and improved security in the region.
