‘We Shook Ruto’s Stronghold’ – Gachagua Breaks Silence After DCP Loss in Emurua Dikirr
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has spoken for the first time following the defeat of Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) candidate Vincent Rotich in the hotly contested Emurua Dikirr by-election, declaring the outcome a “political victory” that has transformed Rift Valley politics.
In a strongly worded statement issued after the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) announced UDA candidate David Kipsang Keter as the winner, Gachagua congratulated Rotich for what he termed a “splendid performance” despite losing the seat.
The former deputy president praised Rotich for securing 10,760 votes against UDA’s 18,266, saying the result had “shaken South Rift politics” and signaled growing resistance against President William Ruto in a region long perceived as the ruling party’s political stronghold.
“A score of 10,760 votes is no mean feat,” Gachagua stated. “The DCP Party has made a heroic entry into Kenyan politics and is undoubtedly the most credible alternative vehicle for aspirants who cherish democracy and detest sycophancy.”
Gachagua also hailed the campaign team behind Rotich, particularly women supporters whom he claimed campaigned “at night and odd hours” to popularize the party in the constituency.
In a direct attack on the Kenya Kwanza administration, the former DP accused state operatives of orchestrating a last-minute voter bribery scheme using public resources.
He alleged that millions of shillings were distributed through chiefs, village elders and Nyumba Kumi structures in what he described as a “night operation” aimed at influencing voters.
Despite the loss, Gachagua insisted the by-election had elevated DCP into a formidable political force ahead of the 2027 General Election.
He argued that the party’s growing popularity reflects the frustrations of ordinary Kenyans struggling with challenges such as the high cost of living, poor healthcare, insecurity and unemployment.
“To the great people of Emurua Dikirr, you are the true heroes of our nation for showing independence of mind and refusing to be intimidated,” he said.
Gachagua further revealed that upon returning from an overseas trip to the United Kingdom, he plans to personally visit the constituency to thank voters and campaigners who supported Rotich.
He expressed confidence that Vincent Rotich would emerge stronger in the next election cycle, boldly declaring: “Watch this space, Vincent Rotich will be the candidate to beat on August 10, 2027.”
The Emurua Dikirr by-election was widely viewed as a political test between UDA and the emerging DCP movement, with analysts now warning that the contest could signal shifting political dynamics in the Rift Valley ahead of 2027.
