Police Foil Armed Robbery in Mombasa, Arrest One Suspect

Police officers in Mombasa Central Sub-County have foiled an armed robbery and arrested one suspect following a swift response to a distress call in the Mwembe Tayari area early Wednesday morning.

According to police reports, officers attached to Mombasa Central Police Station were conducting a routine foot patrol when they received information about an ongoing robbery at a local establishment.

The officers immediately rushed to the scene, where three suspects posing as customers had reportedly stormed the premises armed with machetes, commonly known as pangas, and began terrorising staff and patrons.

In the ensuing operation, police managed to overpower and arrest one of the suspects. A sharp panga believed to have been used during the robbery was recovered at the scene.

Two other suspects, however, escaped and remain at large, prompting an ongoing manhunt by security officers.

The arrested suspect was escorted to Mombasa Central Police Station, where he was placed in custody pending further processing and arraignment in court.

Police said investigations are underway to identify and apprehend the fleeing accomplices as authorities intensify efforts to dismantle criminal gangs operating within the coastal city.

The National Police Service commended the officers involved in the operation for their quick response and professionalism, noting that their actions prevented possible injuries and losses during the attempted robbery.

“The swift reaction by the officers led to the successful disruption of the robbery and the arrest of one suspect. This demonstrates the National Police Service’s commitment to proactively combating crime and enhancing public safety,” the statement said.

Residents and business owners in Mwembe Tayari welcomed the police response, calling for increased patrols and surveillance to curb rising criminal activities in the area.
