Moiben MP Prof. Phyllis Bartoo Issues Flood Warning Following Controlled Opening of Tendwo Dam
Residents living downstream of Tendwo Dam have been urged to remain vigilant following the controlled release of water from the facility due to rising water levels caused by continued heavy rainfall.
In a public notice issued by Moiben Member of Parliament Prof. Phyllis Bartoo, communities along the Chepkoilel River were warned of possible flooding in low-lying and flood-prone areas as water discharge from the dam increases.
Prof. Bartoo said the controlled opening of the dam was necessary to regulate water levels and prevent potential risks associated with overflow following days of sustained rainfall across the region.
She called on residents to prioritize safety and strictly adhere to guidelines issued by local authorities and emergency response teams.
Among the measures highlighted were keeping children away from rivers and flooded areas, avoiding crossing flooded roads, bridges, and river sections, and staying away from riverbanks and fast-moving water.
“The safety of our people remains our top priority during this period of heavy rains,” said Prof. Bartoo, while appealing to residents to stay alert and cooperate with disaster management officials.
Emergency teams and local administrators have reportedly intensified monitoring along the Chepkoilel River as authorities continue assessing the situation.
The advisory took effect immediately amid concerns that continued rainfall could worsen flooding in affected areas.
