Chamber President Urges Businesses to Priorize Workers on Labour Day

The President of the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI), Dr. Erick Rutto, has called on businesses across the country to use Labour Day as an opportunity to invest in their most valuable asset — their employees.

In a message marking the annual celebration, Dr. Rutto emphasized that Labour Day is not only a moment of recognition but also a strategic opportunity for organizations to strengthen their workforce and business performance.

“Kenyan workers are the driving force behind business success — from frontline staff to technology teams,” he said. “This day reminds us of the importance of fair labour practices that support stable markets and sustainable growth.”

Dr. Rutto urged employers to go beyond symbolic celebrations by actively recognizing team contributions, reinforcing fair-work values, and engaging in meaningful discussions around productivity, talent development, and economic expansion.

He noted that businesses that prioritize employee well-being and motivation are better positioned to thrive in an increasingly competitive environment. “A motivated and respected workforce builds stronger companies and ultimately contributes to a stronger Kenya,” he added.

The KNCCI president also highlighted the role of labour standards in fostering inclusive economic growth, stressing that fair treatment of workers helps create a foundation for long-term national prosperity.

Labour Day, celebrated annually on May 1, honors the contributions of workers and the progress made in improving labour rights. This year’s message from KNCCI underscores a growing call within the business community to align worker welfare with broader economic goals.
