Blaze Aftermath: Learning Resumes at Mirithu Girls as Leaders Rally Support

Learning has resumed at Mirithu Girls’ Secondary School following a weeklong closure caused by a devastating fire that destroyed a dormitory and left students counting heavy losses.

Students started returning to the school in phases under the supervision of the administration and government officials, marking a major step toward restoring normal operations at the institution.

The April 29 fire gutted one of the school’s dormitories, destroying beds, uniforms, books and other personal belongings belonging to students who had only recently resumed classes for the second term.

Temporary tents have since been set up within the school compound to shelter affected learners as plans for reconstruction begin.

Preliminary investigations suggest the inferno may have been caused by an electrical fault.

Firefighters from Kiambu County Fire Department responded quickly and managed to contain the blaze before it spread to other buildings.

No casualties were reported as the students were attending evening prep lessons in their classrooms when the fire broke out.

As the school works to recover from the incident, leaders and well-wishers have stepped in to support affected students.

John Kiragu announced the donation of 100 mattresses and a 20,000-litre water tank to assist the school as learning resumes.

“Following the unfortunate fire incident that destroyed a dormitory at Mirithu Girls Secondary School, we have donated 100 mattresses and a 20,000-litre water tank to the school as students resume studies,” said Kiragu.

School administrators expressed confidence that academic activities will continue uninterrupted despite the setback, even as efforts to rebuild the destroyed dormitory gather pace.
