Two Illegal Firearms Surrendered in Isiolo as Security Operation Gains Public Support
Two illegal firearms have been voluntarily surrendered to police in Isiolo County, in a move authorities say reflects growing public cooperation in ongoing security efforts.
According to the National Police Service, the weapons—an AK-47 rifle and a G3 rifle—were handed over on April 13, 2026, by two residents of the Lowangila area in Isiolo North Sub-County under the ongoing Operation Dumisha Usalama.
Police said the surrendered firearms, along with accompanying magazines and ammunition, have been secured in a station armoury as investigations and further procedures continue.
The development marks a positive step in the operation, which has been aimed at mopping up illegal weapons and enhancing security in the region. Authorities noted that community members have increasingly responded to calls to cooperate with law enforcement, particularly during the current amnesty period.
“The public has continued to respond positively to the operation by voluntarily surrendering illegal firearms,” the police said in a statement, commending residents for their role in promoting safety.
The National Police Service has urged individuals still in possession of unlicensed weapons to take advantage of the amnesty window and surrender them to the nearest police station without fear of prosecution.
Security officials emphasized that illegal firearms have long contributed to insecurity in parts of northern Kenya, including cattle rustling and intercommunal conflicts, and that disarmament efforts are key to restoring stability.
Operation Dumisha Usalama remains active across the region, with multi-agency teams continuing to engage communities, conduct patrols, and enforce the law.
Authorities say sustained collaboration between the public and security agencies will be critical in eliminating illegal weapons and ensuring lasting peace in Isiolo and neighboring areas.
