Sawe Storms Home to Hero’s Welcome After Historic Sub-Two-Hour Marathon Feat

Jubilant scenes unfolded at Eldoret International Airport on Wednesday as marathon sensation Sebastian Sawe returned home to a thunderous hero’s welcome following his groundbreaking sub-two-hour run in London.

Sawe, who stunned the athletics world with a blistering 1:59:30 marathon, arrived aboard a Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) military aircraft, marking a symbolic and celebratory homecoming befitting his historic achievement. As the plane touched down, it was greeted with a ceremonial water salute from a KDF C-145 Skytruck, creating a dramatic and emotional moment that underscored the magnitude of his feat.

Crowds of family members, friends, and proud locals had gathered hours in advance, waving Kenyan flags, singing, and chanting Sawe’s name. The airport transformed into a sea of celebration as the athlete emerged, smiling and visibly moved by the reception.

“This is not just my victory—it belongs to Kenya,” Sawe said briefly, as cheers drowned out much of his remarks. “The support from back home is what carried me through.”

Sawe’s sub-two-hour marathon performance has been widely hailed as one of the greatest milestones in long-distance running, shattering a barrier long thought to be nearly impossible under official race conditions. His achievement places Kenya once again at the pinnacle of global athletics and adds a new chapter to the nation’s storied marathon legacy.

Local leaders and athletics officials praised Sawe’s discipline and determination, calling him an inspiration to young athletes across the country. Plans are already underway for further celebrations in Eldoret and beyond as the nation continues to bask in the glory of its newest sporting hero.

For now, however, the focus remains on a singular moment—an athlete who defied limits, and a country that welcomed him home in unforgettable style.
