Outrage as Protest Victim Laid to Rest in Ishiara

The late Morris Mugo Njoka, who was shot dead during protests over the poor state of Ishiara Level 4 Hospital, was buried today at his parents’ home on the outskirts of Ishiara town, as calls for justice intensified.

Njoka lost his life last Tuesday when demonstrations by residents demanding improved services at the hospital turned chaotic. Witnesses say tensions escalated before gunshots rang out, leaving him fatally wounded.

Hundreds of mourners attended the emotional burial ceremony, which was also graced by leaders including Cabinet Secretary for Public Service, Special Programmes and Human Capital Development, Geoffrey Ruku. The leaders joined residents in condemning the killing and demanding swift action.

Speakers at the funeral called for thorough investigations and the immediate arrest of officers involved in the shooting. They stressed that holding those responsible accountable would be a critical step toward justice for Njoka’s family and restoring public trust.

“This was a young life lost under circumstances that must be fully explained. Those responsible must face the law,” one leader said.

Family members described Njoka as a dedicated and humble man whose death has left a deep void. They urged the government not only to pursue justice but also to urgently address the long-standing challenges at Ishiara Level 4 Hospital that sparked the protests.

The incident has continued to stir anger among residents, with many vowing to sustain pressure on authorities until both justice is served and meaningful reforms are made to improve healthcare services in the area.
