Natembeya’s remarks on Western Kenya voting patterns stir political debate ahead of 2027 elections

Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has sparked fresh political discussion after making strong claims about voting patterns in Western Kenya and the region’s expected stance in the 2027 general election.

Speaking during a recent public engagement, Natembeya argued that voters in Bungoma County and Trans Nzoia County would not support President William Ruto in the next election, insisting that previous support for the Head of State had been overstated or influenced by political alliances and campaigning dynamics in 2022.

He specifically claimed that a significant portion of votes recorded in Bungoma County during the 2022 elections came from communities outside the dominant Bukusu electorate, including residents from neighboring regions and other Kenyan communities living in the area. His remarks suggested that the core support for President Ruto in the county was lower than commonly believed.

Natembeya further argued that changing political sentiments, coupled with emerging grassroots mobilization efforts in the region—particularly what he referred to as the growing “Tawe movement”—could significantly reshape voting behavior in 2027. He projected that the President’s support in the region could decline sharply if current political trends persist.

The comments have drawn mixed reactions across the political spectrum, with supporters viewing them as a candid assessment of shifting political loyalties, while critics accuse the governor of inflaming ethnic-based interpretations of voting patterns.

Political observers note that Western Kenya remains a key battleground region, where leaders such as National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang'ula continue to play a significant role in shaping alliances and voter mobilization.

As the 2027 elections approach, analysts say early political positioning by influential regional figures like Natembeya signals intensifying competition for voter support in a region seen as crucial in determining Kenya’s next president.
