Murkomen Commissions Nuu Sub-County, Announces Security and ID Reforms in Kitui

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to decentralising services and enhancing security following the official commissioning of Nuu Sub-County in Kitui County.

Speaking during the launch, Murkomen said the establishment of new administrative units is part of a broader policy framework developed after nationwide consultations under the Jukwaa La Usalama initiative. The policy, now in its final stages, aims to standardise the creation of administrative units across the country.

“In the meantime, we will continue to operationalise already gazetted units as funds become available, bringing essential government services closer to wananchi,” he said.

The CS also flagged off the distribution of relief food to vulnerable communities across the region, noting that the government remains committed to supporting areas affected by drought and food insecurity.

Addressing rising insecurity linked to resource-based conflicts in parts of Kitui County, Murkomen announced the deployment of formed police units to stabilise the region. He added that preparations are underway to post officers to newly constructed police stations to strengthen law enforcement.

On the issue of national identification documents, Murkomen raised concern over the growing practice of individuals surrendering their IDs to informal lenders as collateral.

“An ID is not legal tender and should not be used as security for goods or services. Anyone holding another person’s ID must return it immediately or face prosecution,” he warned, adding that the government is working to make it easier for Kenyans to acquire identification documents.

The event was attended by several national and regional administrators, including Principal Administrative Secretary for National Administration Beverly Opwora, Eastern Regional Commissioner Paul Rotich, and Kitui County Commissioner Erastus Mbui. Also present was Nuu Deputy County Commissioner Washington Khoi.

Political leaders in attendance included former Mwingi Central MP Joe Mutambu, Kitui County Assembly Minority Leader Jeremiah Mutua, Nuu MCA Judith Wanza, Tharaka MCA Muthengi Ndangara, UDA nominated MCA Deborah Mutuku, and former Nuu MCA Alex Musili Kawaya, among others.

Murkomen emphasised that collaboration between national and local leaders remains key to ensuring effective service delivery and long-term stability in the region.
