Kenyan Government Announces Resignations and Probe into Fuel Supply Irregularities
The government has announced a series of high-level resignations and disciplinary actions following investigations into irregularities in the country’s petroleum supply chain.
In a statement from the Executive Office of the President, it was confirmed that Principal Secretary for Petroleum, Mohamed Liban, has resigned from his position. The Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC) Board also accepted the resignation of its Managing Director, Joe Sang, while the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) confirmed the resignation of board member Daniel Kiptoo Bargoria.
Further administrative action has been initiated against Joseph Wafula, Deputy Director of Petroleum, as part of ongoing disciplinary processes. At the same time, the Kenya Pipeline Company has begun internal proceedings against Joel Mburu, its Supply and Logistics Manager.
The government emphasized that investigative agencies will continue their inquiries to ensure full accountability, warning that any individuals or entities found culpable of economic sabotage will face firm and decisive action.
The developments follow a broader inquiry into alleged irregularities in the petroleum products supply chain under the government-to-government (G2G) fuel supply framework introduced in 2023. The arrangement was designed to stabilize fuel supply, reduce exposure to global market volatility, and ease foreign exchange pressures after shortages experienced in 2022.
Officials noted that despite recent concerns, the G2G framework has generally maintained stable fuel availability and consistent pump prices, even amid global geopolitical tensions.
The government reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding national interests and protecting the public from disruptions in essential energy supplies. It also indicated that further updates will be provided as investigations progress, including measures to reverse any irregular procurement practices and strengthen accountability mechanisms.
