Kenya–China Digital Trade Hub Launched in Shandong to Boost Skills and Market Access

A new China–Africa Digital Trade Talent Joint Training Centre has been officially launched in Shandong Province, China, in a move aimed at strengthening digital trade capacity and expanding economic ties between Kenya and China.

The initiative, spearheaded by the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI) in partnership with Shandong Business Institute and supported by the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT) Shandong and CCPIT Yantai, is designed to equip Kenyan professionals, entrepreneurs, and youth with practical skills in the fast-growing digital economy.

The centre was first proposed in November 2025 by KNCCI President Dr. Erick Rutto during his tenure as Investment Advisor to Shandong Province. According to organizers, the facility was developed and made operational within five months under the coordination of Mr. Tian Changqing of CCPIT Yantai.

At the launch ceremony, Ms. Wei Feng of CCPIT Shandong highlighted digital trade as a central pillar of future China–Africa economic cooperation, noting that cross-border digital integration will be key to unlocking new growth opportunities for both regions.

The training centre will offer certified programmes in cross-border e-commerce, digital marketing, supply chain management, and Chinese market entry strategies. It will also facilitate direct linkages between Kenyan businesses and Chinese markets, enabling participants to access practical trade opportunities beyond classroom learning.

In a video address, Dr. Rutto described the project as a “strategic milestone” in strengthening China–Kenya digital cooperation and expanding Kenya’s participation in global digital value chains. KNCCI’s Chief Representative in China, Mr. Fredrick Mukilya, confirmed that the curriculum has been tailored to align with Kenyan market needs and industry demands.

Shandong Business Institute President Wang Faming pledged full institutional support for the initiative, including the provision of faculty expertise and learning facilities, which were showcased during a post-launch tour of the campus.

The centre is now fully operational and is expected to graduate its first cohort of certified digital trade professionals within 12 months. Stakeholders say the programme will play a key role in supporting Kenya’s export growth and enhancing its integration into the global digital economy.
