92 Learners Transformed as Community Initiative Expands Educational Support in Uasin Gishu

A powerful wave of hope and transformation swept through parts of Uasin Gishu County this week as 92 children from five different schools received school uniforms and essential learning materials through a community-driven initiative led by award-winning teacher Shokwei Barsulai.

The initiative, supported by generous well-wishers from Poland—Marzena Figiel-Strzała and Damian Strzała—has significantly impacted the lives of vulnerable learners, many of whom have struggled to attend school due to lack of basic necessities. The donation included uniforms and other key requirements, ensuring that each child can now step into the classroom with dignity, confidence, and a renewed sense of belonging.

For Barsulai, the moment was deeply symbolic. “Counting from one to ninety-two, each number represents a child whose life has been transformed,” she said during the event. “Behind every number is a story, a dream, and a future that now looks brighter.”

The initiative is part of the expanding Marpo family program, a grassroots effort focused on uplifting children through education and holistic support. Beyond providing uniforms, the program also guarantees that the beneficiaries will have access to meals while at school—an intervention that addresses one of the major barriers to effective learning: hunger.

Education experts have long emphasized the link between proper nutrition and academic performance. By ensuring that these children receive lunch at school, the program is expected to improve concentration, attendance, and overall outcomes, particularly for learners from underprivileged backgrounds.

The distribution event, described by organizers as “truly great and massive,” brought together parents, community members, and volunteers in a celebration marked by gratitude and joy. Emotional scenes unfolded as children tried on their new uniforms, many for the first time, while parents expressed relief and appreciation for the support.

“A happy community is what we stand for, and empowered children are what we truly believe in,” Barsulai noted. “When a child feels seen, supported, and valued, they are more likely to succeed—not just in school, but in life.”

The success of the initiative was also made possible through local collaboration. Special recognition was given to Mama Roseline, who hosted the event and provided critical support on the ground. Her contribution, alongside that of other community members, ensured the smooth execution of the program.

The involvement of international partners highlights the growing importance of global solidarity in addressing local challenges. The Polish donors, who have consistently supported the initiative, were praised for their kindness and commitment to making a difference beyond their borders. Their contribution stands as a reminder of how collective goodwill can bridge distances and transform lives.

Community leaders who attended the event commended the initiative, noting that it serves as a model for sustainable, people-centered development. By focusing on education and basic needs, programs like Marpo are helping to break cycles of poverty and open doors for the next generation.

As the new school week begins, the impact of the initiative will be felt immediately. Ninety-two children will walk through their school gates not only properly dressed, but also filled with pride, confidence, and motivation. For many, this marks a new chapter—one where they can fully participate in their education without stigma or limitation.

“Tomorrow, they walk like kings and queens,” Barsulai said with conviction. “They are ready to thrive, to learn, and to conquer the world.”

With the Marpo family continuing to grow, organizers remain hopeful that more children will be reached in the coming months. Plans are already underway to expand the program, strengthen partnerships, and extend support to even more schools in need.

For now, however, the focus remains on celebrating the 92 young lives already touched—each one a testament to the power of compassion, collaboration, and a shared belief in the transformative power of education.
