26 Illegal Firearms Surrendered in Turkana as Disarmament Exercise Gains Momentum
The National Police Service has reported the successful surrender of 26 illegal firearms in Turkana County, underscoring the growing effectiveness of the ongoing peaceful disarmament exercise in the region.
During an operation in Katilu, police officers facilitated the voluntary handover of weapons, which included 21 AK-47 rifles, 2 M16 rifles, 2 MK4 firearms, and 1 G3 rifle. Authorities credited the success to sustained community engagement, sensitisation campaigns, and structured disarmament initiatives that have encouraged residents to relinquish illegal arms.
“The continued cooperation of the community is critical in enhancing security and stability in Turkana,” said a spokesperson for the National Police Service. “These efforts demonstrate that lasting peace is achieved not only through enforcement but also through trust, dialogue, and shared responsibility.”
The disarmament programme is part of a broader strategy to reduce armed conflicts and insecurity in Turkana County, which has historically been affected by livestock raids and inter-community tensions fueled by illegal firearms.
Authorities emphasized that the success of these operations reflects both the growing confidence of residents in security agencies and the effectiveness of ongoing education on the dangers posed by illegal weapons.
The NPS has reiterated its commitment to continuing peaceful disarmament exercises, encouraging individuals still in possession of illegal firearms to surrender them voluntarily. Residents are reminded that cooperation with law enforcement contributes to safer communities and sustainable development.
This latest surrender marks another milestone in Turkana’s journey toward a more secure and stable environment, highlighting the power of collaboration between security agencies and local communities in achieving lasting peace.
