Uasin Gishu MCAs Adopt Report on Eldoret Children Rescue Centre

Members of the Uasin Gishu County Assembly have adopted a report highlighting serious concerns over the management and operations of the Eldoret Children Rescue Centre, following allegations of abuse and mismanagement.

The report, presented before the assembly by the Labour, Gender, Social Protection and Children Committee, was chaired by Mois Bridge MCA Patrick Kimeli. It follows an extensive inquiry during which committee members visited the facility and gathered testimonies from officials, as well as victims of alleged mistreatment.

According to the report, the committee raised alarm over the continued detention of individuals above 18 years at the rescue centre, recommending that such individuals be transferred to rehabilitation centres or handed over to the police for appropriate legal action. The MCAs emphasized that the facility should strictly serve children below the age of 18.

The report also noted that the centre had outlived its original purpose, citing concerns about individuals staying there longer than necessary. It further recommended that police officers be stationed at the facility to enhance security and ensure proper enforcement of regulations.

In a bid to improve accountability, the committee called for stricter oversight of donations received by the centre from well-wishers. Members argued that proper structures must be put in place to ensure transparency in the use of funds and resources.

Additionally, the MCAs urged the county government to formalize the status of rescue centres by registering them and developing clear operational guidelines. They also called for the establishment of more rehabilitation schools to cater to vulnerable children in need of specialized care.

The report comes amid claims that the rescue centre has been used as a holding facility for street children and individuals arrested during county operations, raising further concerns about its suitability and management.

The matter will now be forwarded to the county government for implementation of the recommendations, as leaders push for reforms aimed at safeguarding the welfare of children in the county.
