Uasin Gishu County Cracks Down on Illegal Ethanol Trade, Seizes KSh 1.5 Million Consignmen
The Uasin Gishu County Government has issued a stern warning to individuals involved in the production, transportation, and distribution of dangerous alcoholic substances, including ethanol, affirming that offenders will face the full force of the law.
Speaking during a press briefing at Langas Police Station on Monday, County Director for the Alcoholic Drinks Control Board, Koiya Arap Maiyo, disclosed that police seized 27 jerrycans of ethanol being transported from Nandi County through Uasin Gishu en route to Nairobi. The consignment is estimated to have a street value of KSh 1.5 million.
Maiyo highlighted that the county will continue working closely with enforcement agencies, including the Kenya Police and the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS), praising their coordinated efforts that have led to consistent crackdowns on illegal alcohol operations. He also urged business operators to obtain the necessary licenses to operate legally and safeguard public health.
“Illegal alcoholic substances pose a serious threat to our communities. We will not tolerate the distribution of these harmful products,” Maiyo said.
Governor Dr. Jonathan Bii reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to protecting residents from unsafe alcoholic products, describing the operation as part of broader efforts to uphold public health and law and order across the county.
County Police Commandant Benjamin Mwathi revealed that two suspects are currently in police custody in connection with the seizure. He expressed concern over a rising trend in which perpetrators use high-end vehicles to transport illicit substances in an effort to evade detection.
Mwathi warned that law enforcement officers will intensify vehicle inspections and urged the public to report any suspicious activities immediately.
The crackdown is expected to send a strong message to would-be offenders and further protect Uasin Gishu residents from the dangers associated with unregulated alcohol consumption.
