Safari Rally Drives Kenya’s Push for Global Sports Tourism

WRC Safari Rally is strengthening Kenya’s position as a leading sports tourism destination, according to Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano.

Speaking ahead of the annual rally, Miano said the globally recognized motorsport event continues to showcase Kenya’s landscapes, culture and hospitality while delivering major economic and promotional benefits to the country.

Held under the banner of the World Rally Championship, the Safari Rally has become one of the most iconic stops on the international motorsport calendar. Each year the event draws rally teams, fans, media and tourists from around the world to Kenya, particularly around Great Rift Valley and the rally hub of Naivasha.

Miano said the rally represents more than just a motorsport competition.

“The WRC Safari Rally is more than a sporting contest; it is a powerful symbol of Kenya’s enduring appeal as a destination where adventure, nature and culture meet,” she said.

Kenya has traditionally been known for its wildlife tourism, but the government is increasingly positioning the country as a host for major international sporting events. Officials believe sports tourism—one of the fastest-growing segments of global travel—offers significant opportunities for economic growth and diversification.

During the rally period, hotels, lodges and camps in Naivasha and surrounding areas typically record high occupancy rates as thousands of spectators travel to watch the competition. Local transport providers, tour operators, traders and artisans also benefit from the influx of visitors.

The event’s international broadcast exposure further amplifies Kenya’s tourism appeal. Millions of viewers worldwide watch rally cars navigate rugged terrain against the dramatic backdrop of the Rift Valley, highlighting the country’s natural scenery and outdoor adventure potential.

Miano said the government is working closely with county governments, private sector partners and local communities to ensure the event continues to meet international standards while generating lasting benefits for residents.

“We will continue to support and attract world-class sporting events that elevate Kenya’s global profile and expand our tourism economy,” she said.

As the next edition of the rally approaches, tourism officials are encouraging visitors to extend their stay beyond the race to experience Kenya’s national parks, conservancies, cuisine and cultural heritage.

“Come for the rally, stay for the experience, and discover the magic of Kenya,” Miano said. “When the world comes to Kenya, it finds far more than a race—it finds a destination unlike any other.”
