Richard Muteti Calls for Urgent Government Action to Support Jua Kali Artisans Affected by Heavy Rains
By John Kariuki
Richard Muteti, OGW, National Trustee in the Jua Kali Sector and CEO of CMSEO East Africa, has expressed deep concern over the devastation caused by the ongoing heavy rains that have affected thousands of artisans across the country.
Muteti extended his heartfelt sympathies to the skilled artisans of the Grogan Jua Kali Association and many others within the wider Jua Kali sector whose workshops, tools, and businesses have suffered damage due to the flooding.
He noted that the Jua Kali sector remains a critical pillar of Kenya’s informal economy, providing livelihoods for thousands of families and contributing significantly to local manufacturing, innovation, and employment.
Muteti emphasized that the destruction caused by the rains threatens not only businesses but also the livelihoods of hardworking artisans who depend on daily income to support their families.
He therefore called on both the National Government and County Governments to act with urgency in addressing the challenges facing the sector. He urged authorities to implement immediate interventions aimed at protecting workspaces, improving drainage infrastructure, and supporting affected artisans so they can rebuild their businesses.
Muteti underscored the importance of safeguarding the Jua Kali sector, describing it as a vital engine of economic empowerment and grassroots innovation across the country.
He expressed hope that swift and coordinated action by government agencies will help cushion artisans from further losses and ensure that the sector continues to thrive despite the challenges posed by extreme weather conditions.
